Military Communication Devices - The lead helicopter communicated using S-band radio links, with several camera helicopters and a search helicopter with a software-defined radio programmed to detect an RF pulse in the target frequency. The team worked with HiveStar software, which handled communication and network processing, via the 5G tablet.
All that was needed was a target for the helicopters to search for. Then the team equipped a remote-controlled toy jeep, about 1 meter long, with a software-defined radio transmitter as a surrogate target. The first military communication tool was the communication car designed by the Soviet Union in 1934. The basics of communication in the beginning were sending and receiving signals, which were coded so that the enemy could not get hold of any top secret message.

Since the advent of distinct signals leading to the formation of the Signal Corps, this body, specialized in military communication tactics. They developed into a distinctive profession where signalman became a highly technical job dealing with all available methods of communication including civilian.
Reliable Test And Measurement Solutions For Design Production And Maintenance Of High-End Radio Devices
When the survey helicopter detected the radio signal of the target jeep, camera helicopters quickly swept over the area and took pictures of the jeep. Then, via the 5G gNodeB, they sent these images, along with precise latitude and longitude information, to the tablet.
Mission completed. Three Lockheed Martin military aircraft, built in different eras, have different communication systems designed to make it difficult for an adversary to detect a transmission. In a project called Hydra, engineers used electronic systems called open system ports to allow the three to communicate freely.
From above, the planes are the F-22, U-2S and F-35. Lockheed Martin Readiness Measurement System - these are various states of readiness or preparedness for militaries used worldwide - whether it is a state of war, terrorism or military attack on a state.
They are known by several acronyms or examples: DEFCON, INFOCON and REDCON in US military communications and BIKINI states in British protocol. The design is exciting, but you should always think about what would happen if all communications were lost.

Would other vehicles still be able to follow the lead vehicle with other types of inter-vehicle communication? I'm sure you've already considered some reliable techniques that can help you in this endeavor. The military has learned well from its wartime experiences the importance of scientific research and development in all fields, including communications electronics.

Advances have been made in the communication capabilities of cable and radio transmission systems and in the improvement of electronic navigational aids. The armies, navies and air forces of the great powers continued to provide more extensive and reliable communications and electronic equipment.
Law enforcement and military communications devices (commonly referred to as secure radios or MILCOM radios) must be as robust and resilient as possible while ensuring minimal practical communication in the field. Modern smartphones are optimized for usability, speed and connectivity using open standards.
Law enforcement agencies need robust and reliable radios, as failure to communicate during actual field operations can result in serious injury or even death. The team started simply by setting up a 5G base station and establishing a connection to a smartphone.
Military Component Antenna And Battery Testing
The base station hardware, a gNodeB in industry parlance, was an OctNode2, from Octasico in Montreal. The base station weighs approximately 800 grams and measures approximately 24 × 15 × 5 centimeters. Take advantage of our unbeatable prices on the same equipment used by the top military agencies across the country.
You will not find a lower price: this is the Two Way Direct guarantee! If you find a better price elsewhere, we will match or beat it! Connectors used in the latest battlefield communications systems must be able to withstand exposure to the elements, as well as shock and vibration.
Samtec has created a complete family of connectors that provide solutions for these demanding applications, from personal radios worn by soldiers to sophisticated tactical networks. At the heart of this concept is wearable technology, which enables the soldier to operate in a digitally connected environment.
These connected devices, a combination of vision, data and voice, must perform in the harsh conditions found in the field. At the same time, they must also provide a very high level of reliability, because there is a very real possibility that lives depend on them.

As the fighter jet and its automated wingmen cross enemy territory, they are already scouring the ground below with radio frequency, infrared and optical sensors to identify potential threats. On a helmet-mounted visual display, the pilot sees icons on a map showing the movements of anti-aircraft batteries and RF jammers, as well as special forces and allied and enemy troop locations.
Robustness and reliability are critical requirements for military, tactical and law enforcement radios as voice and data communications, geolocation, navigation and surveillance must remain operational under very demanding conditions. Testing these advanced radios requires highly accurate instruments to test individual analog and digital components, as well as automated all-in-one radio testers to verify military communications system performance.
After mid-century, as a result, military efforts in all the many aspects of signal communications continued to escalate almost as extravagantly as during World War II. Two major additions to the US military were television and "electronic brain" equipment.
The latter, in many forms of digital and analog computers and such data processing devices as punched card machines, was increasingly used for the management of personnel records and warehouse and supply operations interconnected over large areas by signals.
Military Communications And The Digital Battlefield
Most military and law enforcement agencies around the world still use analog radios in the HF and VUHF bands with safe and robust waveforms that allow mostly secure audio exchange. But today's new commercially available radios offer capabilities beyond analog audio, with highly robust, custom, and protected waveforms.
They also provide exchange via VoIP, automatic positioning/location and functionality to merge tactical missions and intelligence networks. Two Way Direct, Two Way, Two Way Direct Name are trademarks of Two Way Direct and are used under license.

The US, Europe, China and Russia are now integrating 5G technology into their military networks. These are significant and complex projects, and several strategies have already become apparent. That's why it's a problem. Suppose an F-35 detects an incoming ballistic missile.
World War Ii And After
The aircraft can track the missile in real time. But today it may not be able to transmit tracking data to the anti-missile batteries in time for them to shoot down the projectile. It is this type of capability that the 5G.MIL initiative is aiming for.
If you need more coverage, ask us about Enhanced Push-to-Talk. With LMR to LTE interoperability, EPTT offers nationwide coverage without the need for repeaters. You can now rely on personal electronics to connect directly to your radio network, so no matter where your team members are, you'll be able to track and send updates.
While an analog voice radio has a relatively simple HCI, smartphones and general purpose digital voice/data radios are just two examples of devices that can contain much more sophisticated HCI. Android has quickly become one of the most popular HCI frameworks used in consumer electronics.
However, Android is based on Linux, a monolithic operating system that does not meet the requirements of high-security certification and is not suitable for real-time, low-latency tasks. Military communications are activities, equipment, techniques and tactics used by the military in some of the most hostile areas on earth, not only geographically but also in terms of conditions of operations and functionality of the equipment, such as on the battlefield, on the ground, underwater,

air and other conditions you may encounter. Military communications includes command, control, communications and intelligence, also known as the C3I model. Command here refers to communication with the country's highest command. After the commander began the mission, the Freefly Alta X hovered over the lead vehicle at a height of about 100 meters and connected to it via the 5G link.
HiveStar mission controller software controlled the support multicopters to launch, train and maintain the mesh network. The convoy of vehicles began its loop around a test radius of approximately 10 km in circumference. During this time, the helicopter linked via 5G to the convoy's lead vehicle transmitted position and other telemetry information to the other vehicles in the convoy, while following the convoy overhead as the convoy traveled at approximately 50 km per hour.

Data from the lead vehicle was shared from this relay with the following vehicle and with the other convoy via the S-band network based on distributed multicopters. For the team's first test, they chose a fairly standard military task: locate and photograph a target using multiple sensor systems, a function known as tip and cue.
In a war zone, such a mission could be performed by a relatively large UAV equipped with significant processing power. Here the team used gNodeB and S-Band Radio Setup as before, but with a slight difference.
Rugged Gear
All 5G networks need a software suite called 5G Core Services, which is responsible for basic functions such as authenticating a user and managing tower-to-tower handovers. In this test, the main functions were run on a standard floor standing rack mount Dell PowerEdge R630 1U server.
So the network consisted of the gNodeB on the lead helicopter, communicating with the ground with 5G and depending on the management services on the ground computers. It's no wonder, then, that the US Department of Defense, through an initiative called From 5G to NextG, and various complementary investments by individual militaries, has committed more than $2 billion to advance commercial 5G research and to conduct tests and experiments
to adapt the results for military purposes. While encouraging, the Hydra and HiveStar trials were just the first steps and many hurdles must be overcome before the scenario that opens this article can become a reality.
Chief among them is expanding the coverage and reach of 5G-enabled networks to continental or intercontinental reach, increasing their security and managing their myriad connections. We look to the commercial sector to bring big ideas to these challenges.

Suddenly, the pilot sees a blinking dot on the distant horizon through his helmet-mounted display. Immediately, two of the four teammates turn towards the spot indicated by the flash. The helmet illuminates a flight path to the point, and the pilot receives new orders by scrolling the display: Most radios used by the military are analog, but there is a strong demand for a transition to digital;

something going on in the public safety market today. Nowadays, a relatively large percentage of radios used by law enforcement or firefighters are digital. Effective management and control have always been at the heart of leadership.
Even in pre-industrial times, when commanders could often oversee an entire battlefield from a single vantage point, it was difficult to ensure that orders were made quickly and accurately. At Lockheed Martin, we use standard 5G technology to connect the many platforms and networks deployed by the different branches of the military.
We call it our 5G.MIL initiative. Earlier this year, in two projects called Hydra and HiveStar, we demonstrated the feasibility of key aspects of this initiative. Hydra delivered encouraging results on the interoperability challenge, and HiveStar demonstrated that it was possible to quickly build, in an area without existing infrastructure, a highly mobile yet capable 5G network, as would be required on a battlefield.
Early Development
We can classify MILCOM radios by handheld, portable, backpack, and vehicle/onboard form factor. Another common and useful classification is according to the scenario in which the radios are to operate. Radios used by the military in warfare scenarios are called military radios, soldier radios, rifle radios, or tactical radios.
Radios used in civilian environments by law enforcement agencies are called public safety radios, land mobile radio systems, which are very similar in form factor to the portable radios used by the military. The use of military radio communication devices under conditions of danger of war or during disaster relief requires high-tech compliance in terms of QoS, reliability, interoperability, environmental robustness, performance and security requirements.
Radio test sets and adjacent instruments from Rohde & Schwarz enable automation of radio qualification according to international standards and adaptation for private or national safety standards. Some military communications devices, such as radios, smartphones and network cards, must handle information at different classification levels.
The standard policy requires that information at different levels be kept physically isolated. Usually this happens in one of two ways. One method is to request a cold reboot, where writable hardware resources are erased, to safely switch the device between security levels.
Connecting In The Toughest Conditions
Not only is this approach unfriendly to users, but reboots can delay communications and affect mission efficiency. The second approach is to incorporate a discrete red-side processor for each security layer and only requires secure switching of human interface devices (such as a display or keyboard).
Again, the additional processing elements will increase the device footprint, manufacturing cost, and system complexity. The separation kernel can provide a tightly controlled interprocess communication (IPC) path between Android HCI and other red applications, if needed.
For example, Internet Protocol data originating from the Android networking subsystem can be passed through the IPC pipe to the cryptographic subsystem for encryption and transmission. The application of the MILS virtualization concept to the SDR example is shown in Figure 3. Current 5G standards do not include satellite or aircraft connections.
But the planned revisions, dubbed Release 17 by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project consortium, are coming next year and will support non-terrestrial network capabilities for 5G.Chris Philpot
